Warning signs of infection

While most infections can be successfully treated, you must be able to recognize an infection's symptoms for proper and effective care. Notify your health care provider immediately if you have any of the following symptoms:

Diabetes Signs Type 1

Polydipsia :

As the concentration of glucose increases in the blood, brain receives signal for diluting it and in its counteraction we feel thirsty.

Polyuria:

Increase in urine production is the result seen when excess of glucose is present in body. Body tries to get rid of the extra sugar in the blood by excreting it through the urine. This can also lead to dehydration because excreting the sugar which carries a large amount of water out of the body along with it.

Polyphegia : The hormone insulin is also responsible for stimulating hunger. In order to cope up with high sugar levels in blood, body produces insulin which leads to increased hunger.

Weight flactuation :

Factors like loss of water (polyuria), glucosuria , metabolism of body fat and protein may lead to loss of weight. Few cases may show weight gain due to increased appetite.

Often diabetes goes undiagnosed because many of its symptoms (often misspelled as "symtoms") seem so harmless. Recent studies indicate that the early detection of diabetes symptoms and treatment can decrease the chance of developing the complications of diabetes.

Diabetes signs Type 2

Some diabetes symptoms include:

* Frequent urination
* Excessive thirst
* Extreme hunger
* Unusual weight loss
* Increased fatigue
* Irritability
* Blurry vision

Flu like

Flu-like symptoms such as headaches, muscle aches and pains are all part of the symptoms of diabetes. The dehydrated cells throughout the body are demanding nourishment, the blood is sluggish with unmetabolized glucose, and the brain, liver and pancreas are not being renewed. Sounds flu-ish, no? Headaches, muscles aches and pains cause sleep patterns to be even more disrupted, leading to more fatigue in a vicious circle. Diabetes shares this cycle in common with fibromyalgia, and if you think you may have fibro, be sure to get checked out for diabetes before you accept that diagnosis.

Weight loss and gain

Insulin may cause hypoglycemia (low-blood sugar), which stimulates appetite. Intensive insulin therapy may increase episodes of hypoglycemia.

Sulfonylureas -- such as Diabinese (chlorpropamide), Amaryl (glimepiride), Glucotrol (glipizide), and DiaBeta, Glynase, or Micronase (glyburides) -- may cause hypoglycemia, which in turn stimulates appetite.

The thiazolidinediones -- Actos (pioglitazone) and Avandia (rosiglitazone)-- cause fat cells to store more fatty acids from the blood, causing the fat cells to enlarge. Thiazolidinediones can cause fluid retention as well

Blurred vsion

Any type of vision loss (e.g. blindness, blurred vision, double vision, etc.) is a symptom of great concern. Many of the causes are very serious medical conditions. Certain types of vision changes can be a medical emergency where delay can lead to loss of sight (e.g. for causes such as glaucoma, eye injury, retinal detachment) or loss of life (e.g. for causes such as stroke, TIA, etc.). Even transient or temporary blindness or loss of vision cannot be ignored because it can result from serious conditions such as stroke, TIA, hypertension, epilepsy, or migraine. Seek immediate professional medical attention for any such symptoms of vision changes.

Nerve damage

Nerve damage can lead to other problems. Some people develop problems swallowing and keeping food down. Nerve damage can also cause bowel problems, make it hard to urinate, cause dribbling with urination, and lead to bladder and kidney infections. Many people with nerve damage have trouble having sex. For example, men can have trouble keeping their penis erect, a problem called impotence (erectile dysfunction). If you have any of these problems, tell your health care provider. There are ways to help in many cases.

Red, swollen, tender gums.

Diabetes increases the risk of infection in your gums and in the bones that hold your teeth in place. As a result, your gums may pull away from your teeth, your teeth may become loose, or you may develop sores or pockets of pus in your gums. This is especially true if you have a gum infection before the onset of diabetes.
